Hello, Phillip here.
Welcome to the new FREE FICTION FRIDAY
About a week back I split the FreeFictionFriday side of my own personal Substack into two unique worldlines.
Basically, I’ve converted this Halfplanet Press newsletter into a big FreeFictionFriday one, to cater for more free bookshelves.
They will contain some Science Fiction, as per usual, but it might be off on a bit of a tangent compared to what I used to post over at RealPhillipCarter. It could be Sci-Fi horror, or Thrillers about mutant creatures. It could be Fantasy novellas about dragons who own libraries of fireproof books.
Actually that last one sounds pretty cool. I might write it.
Either way, I’ll be putting more time into finding special bookshelves for you to peruse, as well as hunting down book giveaways on social media that align with the genres I know you like.
I don’t know if I’ll ever venture as far as romance or performative sound poetry about wheelbarrows here, so for now it’s mainly the spooky side of Science Fiction or dragons or dark Comedy horror stories. That sort of thing.
My goal here is to become Substack’s best source for free stories, specifically in those genres that are typically underrepresented.
I might put the more distant genres in their own add-on tabs. In the future, you might be able to select the genres you want to hear about like a buffet.
My primary newsletter, Realphillipcarter.substack.com, is still going to host the straightforward Science Fiction and Comedy side of FFF, because that’s what I want to specialise in as a writer, and it’s how I find new readers.
I’ve done a bit of Sci-Fi Standup in the past year, and I’m finding some success as a comedy writer. By January, I should be in my friend’s podcasting studio telling you all stories about aliens and jokes about how I’d run the world.
Let’s delay no further. Here is your free bookshelf for this Friday.
Tales from the cave is a modest bookshelf, containing eight stories in the genres of Horror, Suspense, Thriller, and Crime. My contribution this week is THE CERTAIN UNIVERSE, a contemplative existential horror first published in my Sci-Fi collection Who Built The Humans?

What you’ve got to look forward to
Over on my main newsletter, I’ve just finished quite a lengthy post about Doctor Who’s recent revisions to the Davros character. It’s got a bit of comedy, a bit of opinion, and a bit of an insight into my writing process. I’m submitting a shorter, more newspaper-friendly version to some papers right now, so I’m not sure when it will come out, but it’s good.
Probably my best real-world post since Censordrone, if you remember that.
