Hello all, and happy new year!
January is the first month where I’m really branching out with the promotions. On top of finding varying freebies on Bookfunnel, I’m trying to get my hands on individual author freebies as well. I want Halfplanet Press to be a platform that matches unique authors with interesting readers. I want to support independent (and trad pub, because they need it too these days) authors in finding their readers, and support readers in finding authors.
That was my goal way back in 2015, when I launched my first anthology with that writing society I launched and chaired at Edge Hill University. I only wish I’d listened to my tutor’s advice and start my blog then (I actually did, but I got bored of it and lost it… I don’t even know what platform it was on, or what pen name I used).
About that, I plan to release a free short story by myself soon over at Realphillipcarter.substack.com, and to bring those workshops back, as an online thing.
Ever felt like having a go at writing yourself? You might enjoy the workshops.
But before then, let’s have a look at what I’ve found so far.
For this FREE FICTION FRIDAY, I am also going to experiment with ranking each freebie I find, to make your clicking choices easier!
I’m also picking my favourite covers. Each book featured can be found in its respective freebie shelf, and I make these decisions myself. Let me know if you pick up those books.
NEW YEAR SCI-FI/FANTASY
Days remaining: 11
Books/Stories/Excerpts available: 91
Predominant genre: It’s a pretty balanced mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy this time
Favourite cover: CAT’S PAW. I love this, reminds me of my cat Mister Wiggles.
VAULT OF HEROES
Days remaining: 26
Books/Stories/Excerpts available: 90
Predominant genre: Leans more toward Fantasy, which is to be expected
Favourite cover: THE LAST PROTOCOL. This is a nice, simple cover that conveys the genre as obviously as you can. Some space stuff is going to happen.
BADASS WOMEN
Days remaining: 10
Books/Stories/Excerpts available: 94
Predominant genre: All over the place, which I love. This one is a healthy mix of SF, Fantasy, with some Thrillers and Comedies thrown in as well. Basically, anything with a strong female lead, or side characters. I’m in this one with Hologram Kebab, for Anya’s strong resolve in dealing with the discovery her kebab is… well… a hologram.
Favourite cover: INTO THE BLACK. This one has a glorious amount of contrast and a nice dusty effect blowing in from the text, which matches the swish of the red dress. I’d personally tone that text effect down a bit, but that doesn’t mean this composition isn’t brilliant. Love the nebula in the background too, an important detail for showcasing the multiple genres that are at play here.
