I know, it’s not Friday, but I realised all these shelves have just opened up, so I figured I’d unschedule this and fire it out early.
Like a triple star system, today I bring you three big things.
(I have a migraine, forgive the loose trinary star reference)
I booked myself into three promo shelves this week. In the future I’ll space them out better, but whilst I’m learning how StoryOrigin works, I was excited to find so many new bookshelves to bring to you.
First and foremost, a bookfunnel one.
Shelf 1 - A bit of everything
The caffeinated fantasy tribe always has good promos, and I’m glad to finally be in one. This one is mainly Fantasy, but it does include some complete sci-fantasy from myself (including robot crabs that eat time) and a complete sci-fi prequel by my friend Nicola Rossi, in the form of For Those About To Rock.
(Which, if you didn’t know, is going to be turned into a TV show soon)
Shelf 2 - Character building
Coming close second, stories in which big changes happen to the characters.
I’ve put THE CERTAIN UNIVERSE in this one as well, because discovering that spacetime is a different shape to the one you expected it to be is a pretty big shift in perspective.
Shelf 3 - Epic stories
Secondly, stories with epic scope.
An Epic September focuses pretty heavily on Fantasy stories, and narrows that focus further toward stories with an epic premise.
And again, my short sci-fantasy THE CERTAIN UNIVERSE (previously only available in my collection WHO BUILT THE HUMANS?) is available in its entirety here too. It concerns an alien in the distant future who befriends a robotic crab that can eat weekends.
It makes sense in the story, honestly.
Thanks again for being a part of Free Fiction Friday. My goal with this and Halfplanet Press is to create a fringe industry that supports and shares work by authors who might otherwise have been overlooked by bookstores, in the hopes that one day I can fill the shelves of my bookstore with books by these strange and innovative writers, and that this bookstore will become a hub of activity that keeps the Arts alive in whatever city it emerges in.
Your presence here is making that goal a reality.
Behind The Scenes.
I’m very exhausted with my new job (I am currently on day four of a vicious migraine) so admittedly I’ve not had much brain power left in the evenings to research things to build up Halfplanet, but I am enjoying being in StoryOrigin and finding you new authors who are’t on Bookfunnel.
Having both was a good idea.
And whilst I’ve enjoyed playing around with Sendfox (aforementioned automatic email machine), I am not 100% confident it would work as well as Substack for Free Fiction Friday. I think it is best used for what I initially was drawn to it for; creating an automated version of my personal Substack, so my best posts don’t vanish as time goes on.
That might change when I have more time to learn it, but for now FFF is staying here.
So I’ve been finding my best posts from across Substack, looking through hundreds (yes, really) of drafts, and piecing together something that I think will be a lot of fun. It will open with my thoughts on the origins of Science Fiction, and will automatically send you stuff from the date you sign up.
I’m looking at gamification as well. I used to (and will be resuming soon) design RPGmakerVXace games, and enjoyed having these narrative branches which opened up new layers to the levels.
If I can manage that inside an email robot, I think I could invent something that would be a lot of fun for you.
More news eventually.
(Also, I will be publishing a narrative game in the future).
Please do comment/like if this sounds like your sort of thing,
